Atlantean goddess Chalchihuitlicue
The Atlantean/Ātlāntin (in Toltec, an Atlantean language — hence the name “Atlanteans” for the Toltec statues and in Tula) goddess Chalchiuhtlicue (pronounced chal-chee-oot-lee-kway) is an ancient goddess from pre-flood Atlan.
While her husband (or brother), Tlaloc, governs the “vertical” waters falling from the sky (rain and storms), Chalchiuhtlicue governs the terrestrial waters—rivers, lakes, oceans, and streams—that flow across the earth.
Her name translates to “She of the Jade Skirt” (chalchihuitl = jade/precious green stone; cueitl = skirt).
To the Aztecs, jade represented water, preciousness, and life. A “jade skirt” symbolizes the surface of the water covering the earth.
Like the waters she governs, she is dualistic. She is honored as a life-giver (irrigation, drinking water) but feared as a destroyer (floods, drowning, and water storms).
She is the goddess of:
· Running Water: Rivers, streams, and flowing springs.
· Lakes and Oceans.
· Fertility and Childbirth.
· Beauty and Youth.
· Storms and Tempests.
She is a nurturing but potent force. She brings the life-giving sustenance of water, but also its destructive power in floods and hurricanes. She presided over the previous world era, which was destroyed by a great flood.

The Myth of the Fourth Sun
One of the most significant myths involving Chalchiuhtlicue is her role as one of the “Suns” (eras of creation). The Aztecs believed the world had been created and destroyed four times before our current age.
Chalchiuhtlicue ruled over the fourth world, known as Nahui Atl (4-Water). It was an era of golden abundance and vast waters.
The era ended when she was mistreated by the god Tezcatlipoca, the god of war, conflict, sacrifice, and darkness. In her grief, she wept blood, which turned into a massive flood that drowned the world.
To save the humans of this era from drowning, they were transformed into fish, and later were reborn as an evolved form of humans.
The Great Deluge: Chalchihuitlicue’s role in The End of Atlantis
It was Chalchihuitlicue that caused the great deluge that ended the mythological empire Atlantis. The account recorded by the Ancient Egyptian-Atlantean scribes that was obtained by Solon, which was documented in Plato’s discourse about Atlantis — states that the conditions that led up to the end of the pre-deluge Civilization cycle were caused by the same reasons recorded by the Ancient Mesoamericans (Direct descendants of the Atlanteans) for the end of the Fourth World.
The conditions of the Fourth World are aligned with the conditions stated in Plato’s discourse too. This along with the fact that Atlantis was a continent in the Atlantic past the Straits of Gibraltar gives almost undeniable evidence that the American continent was part of the mainland of Atlantis, and was known in pre-deluge times as the main continent of Atlantis.
Role in Daily Life and Ritual
Because she controlled ground water, she was intimately tied to human fertility and the cycle of life.
Baptism: She was the patron of childbirth. When a child was born, the midwife would bathe the infant in water, invoking Chalchiuhtlicue to cleanse the baby’s heart and give it a “good” foundation. This ritual bore a striking resemblance to Christian baptism, which fascinated (and confused) early Spanish missionaries. Despite the influence of Christianity, the practice actually stems from early pre-deluge Atlantean traditions which indirectly influenced later Abrahamic traditions (including Christianity).
Safe Passage: Travelers crossing rivers or lakes would offer incense or small items to her to prevent drowning.
Iconography: How to Spot Her

The Jade Skirt: She wears a skirt painted blue-green, often decorated with jade beads or shells.
Water Flow: She is frequently depicted with streams of water flowing out of her skirt or hands, sometimes carrying babies or harvest items within the current.
Amaranth: She often wears a headdress made of amaranth paper with cotton tassels.
Chalchihuitlicue as a Night Lord
The Lifelong Influence of Being Born Under Chalchihuitlicue
To have Chalchihuitlicue as your ruling Night Lord means her energy is a fundamental, underlying current in your life—the “background music” to your soul’s purpose. It colors how you navigate the world, especially in your private, intuitive, and emotional life.
Here’s how this might manifest:
- A Deep, Emotional Nature Like Flowing Water
Your emotional life is not shallow; it is a powerful, flowing river. You feel things very deeply and are highly empathetic, easily absorbing the emotions of those around you like a sponge.
· Strength: You have an immense capacity for compassion, nurturing, and emotional support. You naturally “go with the flow” and adapt to emotional circumstances.
· Challenge: You can be prone to being “swamped” or overwhelmed by your own feelings or the emotional energy of others. Learning to set healthy emotional boundaries is a critical lifetime lesson.
- A Connection to Purification and Healing
Chalchihuitlicue’s waters are cleansing. You may be naturally drawn to roles or situations where you help others heal, release old trauma, or “wash away” what no longer serves them. This could be through therapy, energy work, or simply being a trusted confidante.
· Strength: You have a healing presence. People feel cleansed and renewed after being in your energy.
· Challenge: You may take on the “dirty water” of others—their pain and problems—and need to be very conscious of your own purification practices to avoid carrying that weight.
- A Life of Cyclical Change and “Floods”
Just as Chalchihuitlicue destroyed the previous world with a flood, her energy in your life can signify periods of intense, transformative change that wash away old structures. Your life path may not be linear; it may be marked by distinct eras, separated by emotional or life-altering “storms.”
· Strength: You have a profound ability to reinvent yourself. When things fall apart, you have the resilience to flow into a new form. You understand that destruction can make way for new life.
· Challenge: There can be a fear of “the other shoe dropping,” or a pattern of creating emotional upheaval if things become too stagnant. Learning to navigate change without creating unnecessary drama is key.
- An Appreciation for Beauty and Nurturance
As the goddess of jade and youthful beauty, this influence gives you a strong aesthetic sense. You are nurturing, creative, and you find peace in beautiful environments — especially those near water. You have a “green thumb” and a talent for creating welcoming, harmonious spaces.
- The “Storm and the Calm” Duality
This is the core duality of Chalchihuitlicue. You likely have two primary modes:
· The Calm, Life-Giving Lake: Peaceful, nurturing, serene, and deeply supportive.
· The Destructive Hurricane: Overwhelmed, emotional, capable of unleashing torrents of feeling (or words) that can sweep things away.
A major life goal is to integrate these two aspects, learning to channel the power of the storm into creative force, while maintaining the deep, steady calm of the lake most of the time.
To be born under the Night Lord Chalchihuitlicue is to have a soul that learns through the medium of emotion, intuition, and cyclical transformation.
Your life’s journey is about learning to:
· Flow without being overwhelmed.
· Nurture yourself and others without drowning in others’ needs.
· Cleanse without destroying or being destroyed by the process.
· Embrace change (especially the beginning and ending of cycles) as a natural, life-giving force, while creating islands of beautiful, serene stability that provide nourishment.
You are here to master the deep, powerful, and ultimately life-giving currents of emotion (water), and to help others navigate and purify their own rivers, lakes, oceans, and hurricanes of emotions.
